是的,對我們來說,王敏德是一個藝人,而在藝人這兩個字之後,一般都要加上括號,括號之內包含了許多許多有關王敏德的其他身份,音樂人、設計師、機師、丈夫、孩子的父親等等,而最新動作,就是跟腕錶品牌BREMONT合作,設計自己的腕錶。對王敏德來說,那些括號註釋全都不需要,他抱持的生活觀,終究是相當人性化,私人性的東西。「我希望建築一個類似巢穴似的舒適空間,再在那兒愉快地跟家人一起生活,努力工作,也努力玩樂,再進一步是跟周遭朋友分享喜悅。」他親近生活的步伐,從未停止過。

To me, Michael Wong is, above all, an artist. And oftentimes, when describing Michael Wong, what follows is a slew of other roles in brackets following the title of “artist” – musician, designer, pilot, husband, father, etc. Wong’s latest foray is a collaboration with luxury watch brand, Bremont, where he has designed his very own wristwatch, but to him, it’s all just a part of life, “I hope to someday build a nest-like hideout for my family and I – a space where I can work hard and play hard, and also use to enjoy time with my friends,” says Wong.

 

 

建構

這些年來,都看到王敏德生活得樂趣無窮,喝最好的酒,製作最喜歡的爵士樂碟片,跟許多品牌互動合作,也會駕駛直昇機在天空飛翔 ── 事實上,這是玩樂,同樣也是一種建構,是自己的將來,也是為了孩子的將來。「全天候工作是否就等於做得好呢?我不相信的,我覺得這不可能會健康的人生,當然,換個來說,只玩不做就更糟糕,講求平衡是最重要的,好像我近年少了喝酒,這並不是因生厭,反而是因為太喜歡,才會講究把什麼東西放進胃裡,不會隨便去喝,追求的是質,而不是量。至於我現在所做的,一切都是自己的最愛,當你遇上一些可以繼續開拓的機會,很理所當然就會去想,若多走一步的話,會有怎樣的光景呢?我覺得要一直保持這種狀態,最好當然是把這些嗜好都轉化成自己生活的一部份,彼此密切,不能分割,會令人思考將來的發展,我跟許多不同的品牌合作,了解到那些令人佩服的成就背後,最初的動機都是從自己喜好出發,繼而由不同年代的後人們將之發揚光大,我是一個很清楚自己位置的人,也很擅長看出市場的需要,經過了這些日子吸取的經驗,我希望創作屬於自己的品牌,把我的生活品味和哲學灌注入內,我們現在龐大的大中華市場,美國可以孕育出例如 CK 這樣的著名品牌,為甚麼我們不可以呢?這個建構不單止是為了我,也是為了我的家族成員的未來,我承認這是不容易的事,但有困難才會逼發潛能出來,不是嗎?克服困難是最強的動力,可以令人保持青春,頭腦靈活,好像我每一次駕駛直昇機,都覺得自己是年青人,是個充滿很多可能性的小伙子,這樣令人心跳不已的計劃,令我每天都充滿能量。」王敏德說得歡天喜地,手舞足蹈,臉上展現充滿孩子氣的笑容,但同樣地,他的眼神流露出自信堅定的光采。

Building a Foundation

The past few years have seen Wong really enjoying life – from drinking the best wine to producing a jazz CD, collaborating with brands, and learning to operate a helicopter, it all seems to be merely fun and games for the actor, when in fact, it really is a foundation of sorts, whether for himself or for his kids. “Is working 24/7 a good thing? I personally don’t think that’s healthy, though on the other hand, all play and no work isn’t a good thing either. I believe it’s all about balance – for example, I’ve cut back on drinking recently, not because I grew tired of it, but because I love it too much. I won’t drink just anything now – I’m looking for quality, not quantity,” says Wong. “As for what I’m pursuing now, it’s everything that I love. When you stumble upon something that has potential to be developed, you naturally wonder how far you can run with it. And to maintain this thought process, it’s best to incorporate these interests into your life, to make it a part of you, inseparable. Having worked with different brands, I’ve noticed that their success all started with a passion, which was later developed by following generations and successors. Knowing where I stand and what I believe in, I am also quite perceptive to the market’s needs, and with the experience that I have gained, I hope to one day create my own brand, something I can infuse my tastes and philosophies into. With the huge potential of China today, and through the success of American brands like CK, I’m thinking, why can’t we do something like that too? This foundation that I’m building is not just for me, but for the future generations of my family. I admit, it’s not easy, but how will you discover your potential without a bit of challenge? Overcoming obstacles is a strong force and motivator, and keeps us young and our brains active. Every time I fly a helicopter, I feel so young, exhilarated, and recharged. I feel like a kid who believes that anything is possible!” Wong’s face lights up with joy, speaking with his whole body and carrying a grin of a little boy, while his eyes emanate the confidence and strength of a man.

發展項目眾多的王敏德,剛好完成了跟腕錶品牌「BREMONT」的合作,交出了首枚自己設計的作品,一枚採用了直昇機物料去打造的腕錶,可想而知熱愛飛行的他,會是如何心滿意足,加上能夠藉此紀念香港飛行歷史100 年,彰顯王敏德一夥紮根香港的心。但最令他無比享受的,是因為飛行而衍生的友誼。「這品牌的兩位擁有者 Nick 和 Giles,本身也是機師,為何他們這對英國人兄弟,會為自己的品牌改了一個法國名字?其實這也是奇妙的緣份,話說他倆有一次在飛行途中遇上引擎故障,被逼降落在法國巴黎南面的一個農場之內,因此認識了農場主人,而這位農場主人也是一位戰時機師,這兩位英國兄弟決定紀念這位前輩,採用了他的名字去成為品牌名稱,而我亦因為自己的機師身份而認識了他們,更親自駕駛直昇機帶他們在香港的天空欣賞風景,彼此成為好友後,便決定合作製造這腕錶。」

Enjoyment

The ever-busy Michael Wong has just finished a collaboration with Bremont, designing a watch using helicopter materials. For an aircraft lover such as Wong, it’s easy to see why this project piqued his interest, and with the upcoming 100th anniversary of aviation development in Hong Kong, Wong’s ties to the city are also fittingly apparent. The best parts of the experience for Wong, though, are the friendships that have grown from his love for flying. “The founders of the brand, Nick and Giles English, are both pilots. Why then, did two English brothers use a French name for their brand? Apparently, during one of their flights, the brothers encountered an engine problem and were forced to land on a farm in south of Paris. They met the owner of the farm, and learned that he was also a wartime pilot, so they decided to honour the owner by naming their brand after him. I also met Nick and Giles as a pilot, and was able to take them on a helicopter tour of Hong Kong. We became very good friends and decided to produce this watch,” explains Michael.

 

「你為這作品注入了甚麼主旨呢?」我問。 王敏德輕輕點著頭,認真地一字一語說著:「我當然有啊!我覺得不管任何事,也不要忘記本心,好像第一次駕駛直昇機的興奮,那種誠惶誠恐,小心翼翼,我希望自己到了七十歲,每次駕駛直昇機也有這種感覺。我看到有些人順境的時候,漸漸便忘記了最初處事的心態,這樣子都不會有好的結果,忘掉了本意,再做甚麼也沒有意思,對嗎?」他舉起手中的紅酒,愉快地跟我碰杯後一飲而盡,他很滿足地放下酒杯說:「人生也像喝酒的態度一樣,就是要講求平衡,再好的酒,沒有家人和朋友一起品嚐,味道就會有些不對,此外,喝得太多的話,又等於浪費了美酒,酒是開開心心地喝,不是用來消愁,心情不好的話,再好的酒也不美味。」

有理由相信,王敏德靠著這樣的步調前進,精彩可期。

“What were your philosophies or inspirations going into the design of this piece?” I ask. “I believe that regardless of anything that you do, you absolutely can not forget the heart. The excitement, thrill and cautiousness that I felt on my first helicopter flight – I really hope that I will be able to hold on to that feeling until I’m 70. I often notice that others are quick to forget their initial emotions about certain things when everything is going well in their life – to forget the original intention for anything sort of makes everything else meaningless, don’t you think?” Wong picks up his glass of red wine and clinks it against mine, then downs the entire glass. Returning his glass to the table, he says, “Life is like drinking a glass of wine – it’s all about balance. Without family or friends to enjoy it with, even the best wine won’t taste any good. On the other hand, drinking too much is just a waste – wine should be savoured and enjoyed, not to be used as a numbing agent when things aren’t going well, because at that point, nothing will really taste very good at all.”

With a set of philosophies and beliefs as firm and positive as Wong’s, the future seems as bright as ever.

He knows that there are a lot of opportunities out there, but he is like a young cub enjoying itself in the comfortable nest and guarding its beloved family. Clamming up himself and following his heart, he is always pleasantly facing the outside world in a harmonious way.

他當然清楚世界上還有更棒的,但卻仿傚懶得出洞的小動物一樣,總愛窩在這個舒舒服服,安安穩穩的溫暖巢穴,守護著最深愛的家人,用隨心隨緣的沉默態度,去跟周遭作出最恰到好處的互動,微笑地。

The Worldview He Perceives

The Hong Kong actor Liu Kai-chi, frankly speaking, is entirely free from the fast-changing trends. Without pulling a stunt or making great brags but only performing with professionalism and moving skills, he is able to present the most wonderful parts to the audience. These “parts” represent the worldview that he always perceives – applying to playing in films and the drama “The Wild Boar” as well as teaching acting in Hong Kong Baptist University.

抱持的世界觀

事實上廖啟智的存在,直接去說的話,他就是完全不受時代潮流的變遷所左右,演技上沒有多餘的特技花招,會有讓人感動佩服的技巧性表演,但他是不會刻意炫耀地去搶去叫賣,只是很若無其事就把精采的東西帶進來。而那些「東西」正正就是他所抱持的世界觀,從他在電影的發展、參演舞台劇《野豬》、在浸會大學擔任導師教授學生演戲,都是一脈相承。

“At work I’m rather a passive person. I depend solely on the situation and environment, whatever comes then I follow and make the most suitable attempt. Although I have expectations, I do not make long-term plans but only follow my heart. After all I think what you are facing at the moment is the most important, it seems easy-peasy to get things smoothly done every day but there are still hard times. Therefore I keep reflecting on myself and looking for improvements – this is me – from TV series to films, even to teaching – I always get myself well-prepared first otherwise I will hardly be confident even if given the opportunities. To me, teaching gives me new insights and satisfaction because I don’t only see the students learning and improving but myself as well, perhaps like wines that can be sedimented and fermented! With the television licence becoming less stringent, my students are able to enjoy more rooms for development, but I still make it clear that the lecture isn’t an employment agency; I always encourage them to learn to hold on straight to the end, persistence and confidence are far more important than the appearance. On the other hand, the working hour of teaching is more stable, which allows me to spend more time with family and this is what I truly enjoy,” Liu, with an elegant smile, says as he is sipping a cup of coffee.

「簡單來說,在工作上我是個比較被動的人,一切都是看形勢和氣候,事情怎樣過來,我就怎樣過去,作出最適當的互動,心中當然有一些期盼,但都是用平常心去面對,我也沒有什麼長遠的計劃、計算,我始終覺得最重要的就是眼前事,可以順順利利去做好一天的事情,看似很容易,但其實也有很困難的地方呢!所以我會不停的自省,去找出自己可以改善的地方,我自己的性格向來是這樣,從電視伸延到電影,甚至現在去教書,心態都是一樣,先做好自己才能說其他,自己裝備不足的話,即使機會出現也沒辦法把握,所以教書對我來說,也是溫故知新,而且看到學生進步,有很大的滿足感,在過程我也有所得着,可以重拾學院派的基本功,可能有機會發酵再沉澱呢!隨著電視台牌照的開放,我的學生無疑是多了一些未來發展空間,但我也強調這課堂不是職業介紹所,希望他們學懂堅持,不要輕言放棄,外形雖然重要,但更重要是耐力和自信,要有自省能力才有路可走,我和學生們都在互相勉勵,另外,因為教書時間上的穩定,更令我可以和家人多些時間在一起,這才是我開心的事。」廖啟智說著同時,臉上流露出優雅的笑容,淺淺的喝一口咖啡。

Interaction between Sense and Emotion

It is not difficult to tell you the charm of Liu’s performance, yet his greatest appeal is his ability to understand a role thoroughly then present it effortlessly in his own way – reconstructing every inner part but retaining the framework. Just by looking at this, we can understand the way he interacts with individuals, and after all, it is a very personal matter.

味道跟情感對等

有關廖啟智的表演魅力,實在可以舉出幾項來,而當中尤其無法企及的,就是內裡的解像力,可很轉瞬間就進入角色的核心,把那內容一一舒解開來,然後又再依自己的意思隨興重組起來,結構依舊保留,但內部已經重組替換過一番,可以理解他在日常的建構,和這種感覺大致相同,終究屬於相當個人性,私人性的東西,正如他所說的互動。

“The recent drama ‘The Wild Boar’ I played in is a heavy and ambitious one: by narrating a missing intellectual, it metaphorically shows how business-government collusion destroys a city. Wild boars, looking as ferocious as always, are used by hunters as a tool to train gun dogs. Before they die, they are taken in front of the dogs to embolden them. Very often the boars make a threatening move to the cities because we, human, have destroyed their habitat. I worked with TV and theatre star Wong Tze-wah, theatre actor Tyson Chak, film star Karene Lam etc., in the drama, but the most impressive part is the time spending with playwright Candace Chong Mui-ngam. It was uncommon to have playwrights talk to you before, but as they are having greater importance, we have more time to come into contact with them, which is a good change. Another thing that impresses me is the theatre artist Abby Chan, who surprisingly has the same Chinese name as my wife! Did I watch TV at midnight lately? You mean “The Emissary” right? My wife and I do watch as that is the first drama series she played the leading role. She only watched two episodes, it was way too long ago! Ha Ha!” We had a long chat, so long that the sun began to set and the cup of coffee became a glass of wine.

「最近做舞台劇《野豬》,故事很沉重,以一個知識分子的失蹤,暗喻明示政商勾結與傳媒失勢,是如何去摧毀一個城市,是一個野心很大的故事,所謂「野豬」的意思,是牠們看來兇猛野性,卻原來只是獵人用來訓練獵狗的工具,野豬死前一刻就會被救走,帶到未成熟的獵犬前,給這些獵犬壯膽,牠們之所以跑到市區對人做成威脅,是因為人類為了發展,先去破壞牠們的安身之所。當中我跟黃子華、翟凱泰及林嘉欣等人也有很多美妙的交流,說到最深刻是跟編劇莊梅岩有很多溝通的機會,以往編劇都是很少出現的,但現在隨著他們的地位愈來愈受重視,可以跟他們接觸的時間就更多,這絕對是好的變化,此外就是劇內其中一位演員,跟我的太太同樣叫陳敏兒,哈哈!最近深夜有沒有看電視?你說是《獵鷹》吧?我和太太也有看,這是她首次擔任女主角的劇集呢!只是她看了兩集就說不想再看了,哈哈,真是很久以前的日子呢!」我們說著說著,時間由下午變成黃昏,手上的咖啡也換成了紅酒。

Liu enjoyed his glass of wine and said, “To me great wine is like the opportunities you meet in your life – they are fated and there is no need to pursue them deliberately. If you have no one to share a bottle of fine wine with, more’s the pity; but if you can share it with your family or good friends, even a bottle of ordinary wine will become mouth-filling, all these depend on how much you engage in. I like drinking wine as it helps me relax, but as I want to spend more time with family, I usually drink it at home. For the time being I do not want to stay away from family for too long, my children will become independent one day no matter what, so I really want to cherish the time with them now. It’s just like the rare vintages that we have to treasure,” True, there is unlikely any evolutionary image, all pieces of memories are already stored year in year out, hence sometimes things tend to go towards an unexpected direction.

廖啟智愉快地喝著,分享他對美酒的心得:「對我來說,美酒和人生的機遇一樣,往往都講求緣份,有時候刻意追尋也未必可以如意,有一瓶好酒但沒有分享對象的話,也是遺憾,相反只要有家人在旁,又或是與知己好友相聚,本來普普通通的酒也會變得好味道,其實關鍵都是那份投入感,我在日常也喜歡喝杯紅酒,放鬆身心,但我為了多些時間陪伴家人,所以都是在家裡喝,現在要離開家人太久的工作並非我的首選,始終孩子漸漸長大,遲些他們就會變得獨立,不會像現在還是依偎父母,所以我很珍惜這段跟他們親近的時光,正如美酒一樣,珍貴在於年份、時光,所以,我們要好好珍惜和運用時間呢。」是的,感覺上似乎沒有什麼所謂進化的樣子,而且種種的記憶,經年累月下來也就附著在那周邊了,因此有時候事情往往就會朝意想不到的各種方向流過去。

 

It was an inspiring and thoughtful chat with Liu Kai-chi. When you listen to every of his word attentively, you will fall into his duende, which strikes a deep chord in your heart.

跟廖啟智訪談,他的一字一語,都有功有架地令人 落入沉思的地方,用心去聽,就會不可思議 地受到鼓舞,當中自有像溫柔的打擊鈍器般, 滿有打動人心的東西。
